Otago Road Trip: Food, Nature, Architecture & Hidden Gems
“If you’re planning a South Island escape that combines incredible scenery, wildlife, food, and history, Otago should be at the top of your list. Our recent road trip delivered on all fronts — from cheese tastings and castles to coastal walks, and penguins. Here’s our full breakdown, plus a recommended itinerary to help you plan your own Otago adventure.”
🧀 Food Stops & Easy Travel Living
We kicked things off in Oamaru with a visit to the Whitestone Cheese Deli — a must for cheese lovers. From bold blues to creamy classics, it’s the perfect road trip snack stop.
In Dunedin, we stayed in a couple of incredible Airbnbs with full kitchens, which meant we could stop at New World, grab fresh ingredients, and cook quick, easy meals. It’s such a budget-friendly and relaxing way to travel while still enjoying great food.
For café stops, we also loved starting the day at ADJO, known for its excellent coffee and comforting porridge. And for lunch, Hikari Sushi Bar, with 25% off via our Entertainment Membership, making it an easy win for a fresh and affordable meal out.
🌿 Gardens, Walks & Wildlife
Dunedin Botanic Gardens & Aviary
A highlight of our time in Dunedin was wandering through the beautiful Botanic Gardens and visiting the Aviary, where we met the unforgettable Sid the cockatoo — who repeatedly said “Hello!” to us as we walked by.
Otago Peninsula Walks
The Otago Peninsula offers a multitude of coastal and hilltop walks, each with breathtaking views and wildlife encounters. Highlights from our trip included:
- Sandymount Recreation Reserve – a stunning lookout over the ocean. Note: some of the track is now closed, so check access before heading out.
- Tomahawk Lagoon & 41-Peg Track – a beautiful walk that climbs to the Otago Trooper’s Memorial viewpoint, offering panoramic vistas of the coastline and surrounding hills.
Orokonui Ecosanctuary
One of the most special experiences of the trip was visiting Orokonui Ecosanctuary, home to thriving native birdlife including bellbirds, kākā, pīwakawaka (fantails), and takahē, along with a walk to New Zealand’s tallest tree! It’s an incredible place to connect with Aotearoa’s natural heritage.
🏰 History, Culture & Architecture
Larnach Castle
No Otago trip is complete without a visit to Larnach Castle — New Zealand’s only castle. We used our Entertainment Membership for 2-for-1 entry, making this iconic experience even better value. After exploring the castle and gardens, we highly recommend stopping for a Devonshire Tea in the ballroom — such a delightful way to soak in the atmosphere.
Dunedin Chinese Gardens
Another Entertainment Membership win: 2-for-1 entry to the Dunedin Chinese Gardens — a beautifully designed, tranquil space perfect for a slow wander.
Art, Architecture & Iconic Landmarks
- First Church of Otago — one of the city’s most iconic Gothic Revival buildings, a must-see when exploring central Dunedin.
- Dunedin Public Art Gallery — an impressive collection housed in a stunning building right in the Octagon.
- Dunedin Railway Station — easily one of the most breathtaking stations in the world, with its grand Edwardian architecture and manicured gardens.
- Baldwin Street (The World’s Steepest Street) — a fun and iconic stop for a photo (and a leg workout!) that’s a must-do when visiting the city.
⚙️ Oamaru: The Most Underrated Stop
Oamaru completely surprised us — in the best way. This town is full of character, creativity, and history.
- Steampunk HQ — quirky, immersive, and unforgettable (plus 2-for-1 entry with Entertainment Membership 😉).
- Oamaru Heritage Precinct — packed with quaint vintage shops, artistic spots, and local crafts, perfect for browsing and soaking in the town’s creative vibe.
🐧 Oamaru Blue Penguins
One of the most magical experiences of the entire trip was watching the Oamaru Blue Penguins return to shore at dusk. We highly recommend splashing out on the VIP seats — the views are incredible and the experience feels extra special.
💡 Tip: Bring warm clothing — it gets chilly by the ocean at night — and when the show finishes, take your time leaving. Slowly walking down the boardwalk past the burrows gives you even more chances to spot these tiny penguins up close.
